  • Artist’s Statement

Mia's oil paintings blend illustrative detail with narrative depth, inspired by the local flora, fauna, and her domestic environment. Each piece captures the delicate interplay of natural light and shadow, celebrating everyday moments with a sense of wonder.

She loves words and writing, with books and reading filling her spare moments. Mia finds the ridiculousness of the English language infiltrating her title choices, so look closely and you will find idioms or cheesy quotes as titles to some artworks.

Mia's art is warm and bright and more often than not, brings humour and whimsy to her collectors homes. Her work has been described by collectors as ‘emotionally uplifting’, a description of which she is very proud.

  • Biography

Mia Laing is a professional oil painter and illustrator, working from my sunny studio in Perth, Western Australia. She joins Downlands under the collection of Aspire Gallery (Brisbane, Qld).

Mia has been painting professionally in oils since 2012. Although she initially dabbled in children's illustration, this genre continues to significantly influence her current artwork. Her recent pieces are narrative-driven, often laced with humor, and are intricately detailed, crafted from numerous reference photos, featuring Australian birds and botanicals.

Mia's artworks are featured in private collections worldwide, with many collectors returning for additional pieces to adorn their homes. She has received several art awards, including the coveted People’s Choice award on multiple occasions.

Mia actively explores and embraces non-traditional avenues for showcasing her art, keeping her artistic journey vibrant and dynamic. She enjoys licensing her work with Lalalandshop Australia and has collaborated with Disney Australia, Screen Australia, and Dingo Jazz Magazine. Recently, she created two bespoke artworks for prints at the newly renovated Timothee Resort in Busselton, Western Australia.

  • Influences

Mia's work often features the comforting familiarity of objects from around her home, with titles that render the inanimate with human personality. As a mother of two daughters, now adults, family life has significantly influenced her work, and she hopes that joy, connection, and reflection are evident in her paintings.
