  • Artist’s Statement

    Gaetano Moschella.
In 2008 Gaetano bought his first VL 300 long bed lathe. Attending workshops, taking private tuition and going to many wood shows. Gaetano has always been drawn to items made of wood. Growing up in Wallangarra Queensland, living and working on the family farm, he was always working with wood .
On his travels around Australia and overseas he always seeks out museums and local artisans to watch and learn new techniques. Attending wood shows, exhibitions and chatting to people for more ideas.
At home he enjoys working on the lathe trying out different ideas and experimenting with other techniques. His hobby is all consuming and he loses sense of time as there is always a constant flow of ideas. He has developed highly figured timbers with coloured resins to make unique vases, bowls and platters.
Gaetano mills and sells exhibition grade timbers to the world craft industries. He also turns some of these timbers, with or without resin for his private collection and clients. Gaetano prefers to work with Australian timbers.
He combines dexterity and skill with the eye of an artist to create new designs and variations, especially when seeing something that sparks his imagination.
There is excitement felt when a block of wood is first found and then bringing it alive. Once it is turned, oiled and waxed it then becomes an object to be admired and brings a calming influence and appealing to the eye.
